Mastering the Design and Manufacturing of External Thyristor Excitation Cabinets for Parker DC Drives

Kỹ Thuật Việt Co., Ltd. has completed the design, manufacturing, and load testing of an external thyristor excitation cabinet using the Parker DC598P Drive, for controlling a 355 kW DC motor with a rated current of 850 A.

In addition to Parker DC590P monolithic DC Drives, which are available in ratings of up to 830 A, Kỹ Thuật Việt independently designs and manufactures custom external DC thyristor excitation cabinets to meet specific application requirements, supporting current ratings of up to several thousand amperes. This solution allows the power components to be selected to suit the existing motor while providing appropriately calculated capacity reserves for future plant upgrades.

Design and Manufacturing Process for an External Thyristor Excitation Cabinet

The project covers the entire process, from 3D structural design using Autodesk Inventor and equipment layout to component selection, fabrication, assembly, and complete electrical wiring.

For high-current applications, cabinet design must take into account the integration of the power circuit, excitation circuit, busbars, protective devices, heat dissipation, and installation space. Components are selected according to the technical requirements, with consideration given to future expansion and actual operating conditions.

Key Project Highlight: The cabinet is designed for a 355 kW DC motor rated at 850 A. The components have also been selected with appropriate capacity reserves, allowing the plant to use the cabinet with a new motor rated for currents of up to 1,000 A, within the calculated system configuration and operating conditions.

Inspection, Load Testing, and Delivery

After design and assembly are completed, the cabinet undergoes wiring inspections and checks of the control, excitation, and protection circuits before commissioning tests. Load testing helps evaluate the control functions and overall operating condition of the system before the cabinet is packaged and delivered to the customer.
