⚙️ Drive Upgrade – More Than Just Equipment Replacement
In systems where an Omron PLC communicates with inverters via DeviceNet, replacing a drive is not simply a matter of removing the old unit and installing a new one.
👉 In practice, to restore stable system operation, it is necessary to:
- Understand the DeviceNet communication structure
- Remap control data
- Modify the Omron PLC program
🚀 Project Case: Replacing Fuji Frenic Mega with Parker AC20 180kW
We have carried out an upgrade on a system using:
- Omron PLC with DeviceNet Master (DRM21)

- Existing drive: Fuji Frenic Mega (DeviceNet)

- New inverter : AC20 Parker 180kW
🔧 Scope of Work
🔹 1. Drive Replacement
- Installation and configuration of Parker AC20 180kW
- Setting up communication-based control mode
🔹 2. DeviceNet Communication Handling
- Verification of network parameters:
- Baud rate
- Node ID
- Importing and reconfiguring the device within the system
🔹 3. Omron PLC Modification
- Editing the DeviceNet Master program
- Remapping control data:
- RUN/STOP command
- Speed reference
- Status and alarm signals

⚡ Results After Upgrade
✔️ Stable system operation

✔️ Reliable communication between the PLC and the new drive
✔️ Accurate speed control
✔️ No communication errors encountered

💡 Lessons Learned
- DeviceNet is not plug-and-play when replacing equipment
- Each drive manufacturer uses a different data structure
- Both aspects must be handled:
- Communication layer
- PLC program
🎯 Our Services
