In the corrugated packaging industry, flexo printing and die-cutting machines require stable drive performance to maintain production speed and consistent product quality. For machines powered by a main DC motor, selecting the right DC drive is an important part of maintaining reliable operation and supporting long-term equipment maintenance.
Parker Vietnam has installed a Parker DC590P 180A DC drive to control the main DC motor of a flexo printing and carton die-cutting machine, providing a drive control solution for an existing corrugated packaging production line.
1. Main Drive System of a Flexo Printing and Die-Cutting Machine
The machine in this project uses a single main DC motor to drive the overall mechanical system. Power is transmitted to the printing and processing units through the machine’s mechanical transmission system, allowing the different sections to operate in coordination during cardboard feeding, printing, and carton processing.

With this configuration, the main motor controller plays an important role in adjusting machine speed and maintaining suitable operating conditions throughout the production process.
As industrial equipment ages, the existing DC drive may require maintenance, troubleshooting, or replacement to meet ongoing production requirements. Any upgrade should take into account the motor’s electrical specifications, armature current, field excitation requirements, speed feedback, and actual operating conditions.
2. Parker DC590P 180A for Main DC Motor Control
For this project, the machine was equipped with a Parker DC590P 180A DC drive, part of Parker’s DC590P series designed for industrial DC motor control applications.

The Parker DC590P supports armature and field control according to the selected configuration and is suitable for applications requiring adjustable DC motor speed. The DC590P is also capable of four-quadrant operation when correctly configured, supporting applications that require forward and reverse operation as well as regenerative braking under suitable system conditions.
For a flexo printing and carton die-cutting machine, selecting the correct DC drive requires careful verification of the motor’s armature current, armature voltage, field specifications, and operating requirements. The 180A drive rating must be checked against the motor nameplate and actual load conditions to ensure compatibility.
3. Benefits of Upgrading to a Parker DC Drive
Installing the Parker DC590P for the machine’s main drive is intended to support several practical objectives in corrugated packaging production.

- Adjustable motor speed: Allows the main DC motor speed to be adjusted according to production requirements.
- Drive control flexibility: Provides configurable control parameters suited to the motor and machine characteristics.
- Drive monitoring and diagnostics: Supports operating-status monitoring and fault investigation when the system is properly configured.
- Maintenance planning: Provides an option for upgrading the drive system when the existing controller requires replacement or improved serviceability.
- Retention of existing mechanical equipment: Where the motor and mechanical transmission remain suitable, the upgrade can focus on the drive control system without necessarily replacing the entire machine.
Actual performance improvements depend on the motor condition, mechanical transmission, drive configuration, and commissioning results.
4. Parker DC590P Applications in the Paper and Packaging Industry
DC motor drive systems are used in various industrial applications, including printing, paper processing, and web handling equipment. When an existing DC drive develops a fault or no longer meets operational requirements, assessing a suitable replacement is an important step toward maintaining production continuity.
The Parker DC590P can be evaluated for applications such as:
- Corrugated carton flexo printing machines powered by DC motors.
- Paper and packaging processing equipment with DC drive systems.
- Unwinding and rewinding applications requiring DC motor speed control.
- Industrial machinery requiring DC drive maintenance, replacement, or control system upgrades.
Drive selection should always be based on the motor specifications, operating current, load characteristics, braking requirements, and the machine’s existing electrical configuration.
5. Parker Vietnam – Industrial Drive and Retrofit Solutions
Parker Vietnam supports industrial drive applications, from inspecting existing equipment and verifying motor specifications to selecting suitable drive products and implementing drive system upgrades.
For paper mills and corrugated packaging manufacturers, evaluating the condition of the existing controller, motor, and transmission system helps establish a technically appropriate upgrade plan while avoiding unnecessary modifications to machinery that remains in service.
