🚢 45-TON QUAY CRANE UPGRADE PROJECT
Viet Engineering successfully replaced the entire Parker DC590P drive system for QC05 quay crane, ensuring stable – safe – accurate operation.
Nearly 4 years after our first project replacing the Hoist drive at QC04, we returned with a bigger challenge: replacing the entire drive system for 4 modules – Hoist, Gantry, Trolley, and Boom of QC05. Notably, Hoist and Gantry share one drive, while Trolley and Boom also share another, controlling 4 separate motor groups.
📍 Functions of the Main Modules
- Gantry: the movement of the quay crane on the ground via rail wheels.
- Boom: the structure that lifts/lowers the crane arm, kept in the highest position when not in use.
- Trolley: moves cargo horizontally.
- Hoist: lifts/lowers cargo vertically.
- During operation, the Boom is lowered while Trolley and Hoist usually work simultaneously.

⚠️ Problems Encountered
- The old drives were obsolete, prone to overload faults, and no longer supported.
- The Hoist required high-power motors to lift heavy loads.
- The system design required 1 drive to control Hoist + Gantry, and 1 drive for Boom + Trolley.
- High safety, smooth operation, and minimized vibration during lifting were essential.
🔧 Implemented Solution
The chosen solution: replacing the system with Parker DC590P 1600A for the Hoist – Gantry and Parker DC590P 500A for the Trolley – Boom modules.

⚙️ Installation & Fine-Tuning
System replacement installation time: 2 days.
- Hoist – Gantry: Parker DC590P 1600A, 4 modules (3 power + 1 control).
- Trolley – Boom: Parker DC590P 500A, easily installed even in compact control cabinets.
- Separate field excitation for Gantry & Boom using Parker 512 32A; Hoist & Trolley use built-in excitation.
- Gantry: 2 Parker 512 32A units; Boom: 1 Parker 512 32A unit.
- Integrated Parker TS8000 6-inch HIM display for monitoring and fault diagnostics.
- Additional hardware & peripherals integrated for compatibility with the existing system.

🏆 Results Achieved
- DC590P drives operate stably with no overload errors.
- Hoist runs smoothly, no overload faults when lifting cargo.
- Trolley operates smoothly with no shaking during movement.
- Gantry & Boom perform reliably and accurately.
- Operators experience smoother handling and improved efficiency.
